In order to find out whether a language trip to Malta is
useful or not, we interviewed some students who had already
attended a language course at the Institute of English Language
Studies to improve their English. Here are some of their statements:
"I decided on a language trip to Malta because the offers
were not too expensive. I had not been in Malta before, but
I had already heard many interesting things about it; thus
the decision was quite easy. Moreover, at the beginning of
the year one can already reckon with summer-like temperatures
there."
"During the two weeks in Malta, my English really improved
every day. Above all, I lost a great part of my inhibitions
about speaking. But if you don't keep on practising afterwards,
it will be of no use in the long term."
"Outside the classroom we did not speak English very
much. Only to our host family did we talk in English. We spent
most of our leisure time with other students from Germany,
and therefore we didn't really make an effort to speak English.
I am of the opinion that Malta is absolutely overcrowded with
students."
"My friend and I had a room of our own, and we were
allowed to use the kitchen day and night. Our host family
had a cat and three little children, who were one, three and
five years old. So there was always something going on there!
In the mornings we had a hearty breakfast, and our "host
mother" made sure that we got a breaktime snack. During
the day we provided ourselves with food, and in the evenings
we always had a tasty supper. We also had a front-door key
of our own, and so we were free to do whatever we wanted to
do! Everything was fine, apart from one little thing: We had
not been informed before our arrival that there woulde be
two Italian students staying with our host family, and we
had to share the bathroom with them, which was a little disagreeable."
"A language trip is always worthwhile, even if you do
not improve your English very much. You gain experience which
is of great importance for your life."
Tip:
"In any case, two weeks of tuition are not sufficient.
It should be three or four in order to be able really to extend
the first perceptible success. You should not choose a hotel
with less than three points for comfort, and in the case of
problems with the hotel or school you should report them immediately
and on the spot. Further, in view of the high prices for food,
I would put some dry food (such as biscuits) and a lot of
fruits into my suitcase."
The Institute of English Language Studies was graded by the
students (grades from 1 to 6, 1 being the best):
Average grade: 3
