When I think
a few days back, to the day of our Irish Fair, I smile to myself. It is
a smile of satisfaction at a successful event in which all of us invested
time, energy, and experimental ideas. After an intensive period of preparation
and last-minute flurry, we arranged together a very lively fest. Together
- that's the right word to use.
While recalling the cheerful countenances of the Fair visitors and the
proud expressions on the faces of the English Department teachers, I have
to smile again. I didn't see a single face that was not animated. I saw
only curious eyes travelling from one photo to another, from one colorful
stand to the next. There was really a lot to see.
It was a nice feeling to know that we were behind all these things, preparing
pleasure for other people. They don't have to know about all the thorny
details - how we spent an hour blowing up balloons, only to decide they
were too small; how we had to perform acrobatics to hang up the banners
and garlands; how we begged the cafeteria staff for mayonnaise for our
Irish snackbar sandwiches; or how we grew nervous when the dancers were
late. The visitors only have to keep in mind the friendly atmosphere they
experienced at the Fair.
This goes for us as well. We can forget the long evening hours of decorating
and sore muscles from carrying heavy display boards, video equipment,
and beer crates. We can enjoy our secret smile of satisfaction at a job
well done!
