Fireworks and Festa

It must have been our lucky day, because the Friday of our stay on Malta we were able to experience one of the islands' biggest and most infectious highlights - the start of Malta's FESTA season. From May to September hardly one week passes by without the Maltese celebrating one of their famous and colourful festas. People from all over the island come together, dancing, laughing, chattering and making a night of it.

Especially in the Grand Harbour area we saw hundreds of cheerful faces beaming with happiness that day. Bands were playing loudly and Valletta had been decked out magnificently with Maltese banners and flags. When dawn was finally breaking the whole city was a blaze of festive lights.

Sitting on our hotel-room's balcony late that night we watched the most exlposive fireworks I have ever seen. For about an hour the sky above Grand Harbour was illuminated by a marvellous, colourful display. It was shot off from different areas simultaneously and even from big ships which were anchored in the Grand Harbour.

This great fireworks display illustrating the vibrant music around us is an experience I will not forget in a hurry.
