Feeling British in Beautiful York

by Vanessa Behncken

To me, our excursion to Yorkshire was full of highlights, but my personal favourite was the city of York itself. With its neat little houses and narrow alleys it has its very own charm. Lingering around Newgate Market and strolling down The Shambles just feels like walking through the setting of an old English film. But don’t be surprised when the romantic horse-drawn carriage is suddenly overtaken by a purple, very modern-looking bus. York is not at all an old boring town but much more a very lively city that attracts tourists from all over the world. Above the buzzing traffic on a hill overlooking the city sits imposing Clifford’s Tower. It reminds the visitor of the old days when city walls were still needed to defend the city from enemies.

Besides history, York has a great variety of shops that can’t be found in Germany. Top Shop, Accessorize, Marks & Spencer and the Disney Store are only a few of them where we spent hours looking around. And when you felt a little hungry after a long day of shopping (even if it was only window shopping) you might want to see Mr. Sandwich for one of his delicious freshly-made creations. Sitting in the sun enjoying such a typical lunch and watching the people walking by makes you indeed feel very British. And just when you think you’ve seen everything and nothing could surprise you anymore; watch out for the Viking sprawling across from Starbucks!
