York itself

by Pierre Stoltenfeldt

Although almost every single day of our excursion turned out to be a day full of excitement and surprise, thinking back I still consider our very first trip to the city of York my personal excursion highlight.

I guess I must have been sleeping during those meetings preceding our excursion, for I found myself noticing how big this beautiful city of York is for the first time when we actually arrived in its centre. Consequently, the city I had imagined to be a small town not very much unlike good old Siegen now totally swept me off my feet (which by the way not very much later were covered with blisters due to my aimless meandering). What followed was a day full of staring and jaw-dropping: Art Gallery! Museum Park! Minster! All those sights ignorant me had never heard of now made me regret not having prepared myself for that trip properly. Overwhelmed and not knowing what we wanted to do or see first, we stumbled through narrow alleys into wide roads full of chatter and music and back into narrow alleys, where we eventually found ourselves in a gothic church with countless snoop-type caps hanging from its ceiling just like thousands of caterpillars waiting patiently to turn into butterflies.

No matter where we turned our heads a new reason to fall in love with the city waited...and falling in love is exactly what I did. Yes, I confess: York turned my head on September, 7, and I can't wait to return (even if that means I have to spend another night on a ferry).
