Around the Heart of York

by Nina Teichmann

I think it is very hard to decide which of all the experiences I have had in York(shire) is my absolute highlight, but I finally choose walking the city wall to be my highlight.

As I did not dare to walk it alone, due to my geographical coordination disorder, I asked two friends of mine if they would like to walk the city wall with me. Because of the nice weather (as this day the sun was shining especially bright) and at the first glance of a short way on a partly destroyed wall, they decided to join me.

Fortunately the city wall consists of three larger units, which were originally protecting the city centre from the outside. During several attacks it was destroyed and only three parts remained. The missing parts of the wall could be relocated and are marked by signs on the ground. In order to get to the next part of the city wall, you just have to follow these symbols. Luckily, the routes between these parts were easy to find, so that we were able to follow the city wall around the heart of York. The view from the wall was magnificaent – we could see all the churches, streets and museums we had visited by then. We all think this gave us even a better view over York than the ride on the York Eye.

This walk also helped us, especially me, to gain an overview of the streets of York, which was helpful in case you missed the last bus home to the campus. Although my friends complained about hurting feet, I think this was worth it. I would recommend it to everybody visiting York, and I would also put it on the top of my sightseeing list. It not only shows the tourist attractions of York but also York’s attractiveness as a city, which consists in more than just sights. And it leads you automatically to all the bars (i.e. gates) in it, which often also contain small but interesting exhibitions about York’s history.

And with a length of 2.75 miles, which are about 4.5 kms, you could also use it as a constitutional stroll after eating some fish and chips, which were often quite greasy!
