Laughter and Goose Pimples

by Anne Schülke

I am sure many of the others also choose this experience as their favourite, but still I want write about it and explain why I think it was one of the funniest things we did on the trip. You may have already guessed what I am talking about: the legendary GHOST DETECTIVE.

Interestingly enough I was not even looking forward to going on the Ghost Walk. My feet were still hurting from wearing the wrong shoes the day before and I thought the whole tour was going to be silly and boring. So at first I decided to go on the serious Ghost Walk, announced in the leaflet as an historical tour without any silly effects. But then Pierre persuaded me to go on the GHOST DETECTIVE tour. I told him I would blame it all on him if the tour was no fun at all, but, of course, Pierre was right and the tour was wonderful.

The fun already started when we were sitting near the Viking Museum, waiting for the GHOST DETECTIVE. We were making up worst case scenarios when we saw this old-fashionedly dressed man approaching us as if he was trying to make sure that nobody was following or observing him. His behaviour was just hilariously entertaining. First stop on our tour was The Body Shop introduced by him as: This is (pause to increase the suspense).....the.... Body Shop. Already at this point I had to hold back my laughter. And the tour went on like that. Knowing that it is quite hard to make grown-ups believe there are millions of ghosts haunting York the GHOST DETECTIVE decided to count on self-irony and tasteful exaggeration. And it was a complete success. I have hardly ever had so much fun in my entire life!

He showed us the tax agency as York’s creepiest place. But he was not only funny and extremely witty, but also spontaneous and adjusted his tour to things people said or things that happened. That showed me he was not only reciting a memorized programme, but responding to his audience. And at some points of the tour I even got goose pimples, because when he talked about the untimely deaths of tortured children whose souls are now haunting the place you could not deny you felt a little frightened.

So all in all the tour provided you with anything you could ask for: fun and entertainment but also some cold shivers down your spine. And last but not least the world’s most fabulous GHOST DETECTIVE.
