Born 1682 in Little Newcastle (Pembrokeshire), Wales.
In 1719 he joined the crew of the Welsh pirate, Howell Davies (also from Pembrokeshire) when his merchant ship was seized by the pirates.
Six weeks later, after the death of Davies, he was elected captain.
After the crossing of the Atlantic he took possession of a big Portuguese ship in the bay of Bahia (Brazil). The “Sagrada Familia” was worth 5 million pounds.

He plundered some more shipping in the Caribbean Sea and Newfoundland.
A first attempt to cross the Atlantic nearly cost him ans his crew their lives.
In 1721 they successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean.
In February 1722 a Royal Navy warship commanded by Captain Ogle attacked them when they were at anchor near the Guinea Coast. Roberts, a teetotaller, was among the few who were sober and were therefore able to fight. But nevertheless he died during the battle.
In only two years Roberts had accumulated over 100 million pounds by taking over 400 ships.
