Project report: Wales as a bilingual country – interview with Prof. Colin Baker

Monday, the 14th of June was our great day. We were invited to interview the world famous bilingualist Professor Colin Baker from the university of Bangor. After having received the information about the location of the Eifionydd building (Prof. Baker’s office) from the student hall reception, Phil offered us to take us there in his 25-year-old Mercedes. Our group (Isabelle Klapheck, Susan Overstreet and Hanno Heuel) as well as the film crew (Carola Schmale and Michelle Bender) were packed together on the back seats. They were covered with a woollen blanket which raised the temperature to at least 30°C in the car. Finally we found the building just on time at 1 o’clock. Professor Baker gave us a warm welcome to his office and organised chairs for all of us. That was necessary because of the size of his new office which was even smaller than his former one.

Film camera and audio recording machine were put into position and the interview could start. We asked the bilingualist about his attitude towards the future of the Welsh language with special regard to school, jobs and its use in everyday-life. Professor Baker liked our questions (particularly Susan’s) and answered them in a detailed and understandable way. He dedicated much of his time to us although it was his lunch break. After the official part of the meeting Professor Baker was even eager to get to know more about our stay in Wales and our subjects. In the end we left the building happy and content with our achievement – and with a book written by Professor Baker about bilingualism. Phil finally took us to a beach on Anglesey where we spent a wonderful afternoon.
