To me, choosing the highlight of our excursion to Bath is somewhat like naming my favorite composer or novelist. So many factors figure into that equation that it's almost impossible to come up with a straightforward solution. This was my first excursion, and I enjoyed so much of it that it's difficult to name a single event or activity that was more outstanding than all of the others.
But certainly our walking tour of Bath's city center on our very first day there can be called a highlight. To no small extent, this goes to the credit of our guide, Roger, an enthusiastic and, in the best sense of the word, talkative volunteer tourist guide. Roger had a very lively way of presenting historical facts and legends about Bath. He related all sorts of interesting anecdotes and, with his good sense of humor, was able to incorporate quite a few good jokes into the talk he gave during our 2-hour walk through the inner city. As he was well aware that our group was composed of non-natives, he even provided helpful translations at certain points in his speech. With a look to Cathy and me, he was careful to also mention the American "translation equivalent" whenever he used the word "pavement". More seriously, though, the tour was an informative and enjoyable experience that allowed us to become familiar with the area surrounding Bath Abbey and provided us with both an overview of the major attractions and a preview of what was still to come.
