Clifton Suspension Bridge

I had to think a long time about my personal highlight, as the whole excursion appeared to be a single highlight to me.
In the end I decided in favour of the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. I was fascinated by this bridge from the moment we saw it gleaming through the dark night. We were sitting in the bus, tired from a long day out, when the bus driver called attention to the far-off bridge.
As the Clifton Suspension Bridge belongs to the main tourist attractions, we definitely wanted to make seeing it close-up part of our trip to Bristol.

After a lovely boat trip in the sun, a nearly unsuccessful attempt to cross a road safely and an incident with a dead squirrel on the pavement, we finally managed to reach the foot of the bridge. On the one hand I was fascinated by the bridge; on the other hand I was afraid because I am quite scared of heights. With an unpleasant feeling I climbed the steep footpath to the bridge, accompanied by the others' encouragement.
Standing on the one end of the bridge, it felt even higher than it had looked from below. Although the Clifton Suspension Bridge is 76 metres high, I decided to be brave and try to cross the bridge. Walking carefully on the right hand side of the left footpath, I crossed the 214 metres from one tower to the other. It was not even half as scary as I thought it might be!
On our way back I even dared to take a look down and saw the beautiful Avon Gorge, the river and the street that led us to the bridge. Relieved, happy and also a little bit proud, I reached the point where we had started our bridge walk.
Since the Clifton Suspension Bridge has become my personal excursion highlight, from now on I will never again say that I am scared of heights before I have tried to cross a high bridge, climb up a tower or clamber up a mountain.
