As there were many interesting situations and sights during the excursion it doesn't seem
easy to decide on one particular event. In fact I can think of at least two things worth this
title right at this moment without thinking about it much. Anyway, I will put down what is
less easy to describe.
On Saturday morning we left Bath for our day trip to Bristol where we (Alex, Steffi,
Stephan, Michael) visited Bristol Cathedral after having met Cathy at Brandon Hill Nature
Park.
The old Gothic-style cathedral is situated in the western part of the old town, next to a
public green space. Coming in you are offered the view of the great hall, blazoned by huge
stone pillars which ascend to the arch ceiling of the church.
The long hall finishes into ornate
stone walls with beautiful round windows on either side, and arched windows to the left and
right allowing sunlight to flood those holy halls.
A great part of the atmosphere in the church on that particular day was not just the great
building itself, but our good fortune to be able to listen to a little organ concert, which was
being played when we arrived. The varied play of the organist with its light and quiet parts
swelling into mighty thundering showed impressively, even though not depletive, the
tonal repertoire of that imposing instrument.
Together with the natural ambience of the old church this made a fantastically sublime
atmosphere which I hope to remember for a long time and perhaps be able to experience
once again.
