“Life would be useless without music” as Friedrich Nietzsche would put it, so a music project was a must for the Scottish fair. Finally, a group of students who could play instruments got together and practised famous Scottish tunes.
Our ensemble was made up of a flute player (Rose Wittstamm), two violin players (Hanna Hülskamp, Hanno Heuel) and a piano player (Christian Krämer).
Luck was not on Rose’s side the day of the Scottish Fair. She had caught a heavy cold, but she gathered strength and played the flute despite that!
We played fast jigs and reels (e.g. The Flowers of Edinburgh, Miss Sally Hunter of Thurston…). which are often performed at Scottish folk festivals especially in the Highlands. Our listeners seemed to like them; some people even followed the music by clapping their hands. But we also presented melancholic airs (e.g. Mary, Young and Fair, Mrs Jamieson’s Favourite…) which represent the charm of Scottish landscape.
After the concert we thanked the listeners who were remarkably numerous and referred them to the other events that should follow…
Our thanks to Prof. Heymann for lending us the e-piano!
