During our stay in Edinburgh, the media was
dominated by the imminent international release of the new J.K. Rowling book,
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Rowling, who lives in Edinburgh,
even made a public appearance at major Edinburgh bookshops at midnight, Friday/Saturday,
20/21 June. The excursion students were able to take advantage of the fierce
competition among the many bookstores, purchasing the new Harry Potter volume
on Saturday at bargain prices!
Harry Potter overshadowed the continuing controversy about the new Scottish
Parliament building, which is years behind schedule and way over budget. Potter
and Rowling even managed to upstage Putin’s visit to Edinburgh. He stayed
in the beautiful Palace at Holyrood House, which we had visited just a few days
before!
